National WAND Member of the Month
Name: Caroline Stevenson
Location: Little Rock, AR
Outstanding Contributions: Caroline fostered the idea of building the Beacon of Peace and Hope monument and the Peace Garden as a gift to her community to symbolize the struggle to bring peace to the world. Her vision is now a reality with the completion of the monument and garden on the banks of the Arkansas River.
How long have you been a member of WAND?
I became a member in 1997 right after the local chapter started to form. I've been a proud member of Arkansas WAND for the past 14 years.
Why did you decide to join WAND?
The mission statement of WAND first attracted me to the organization. The goal to "reduce violence and militarism and redirect military spending towards human needs" encompasses everything I care about, and speaks powerfully to people on many levels.
What is your favorite WAND activity or memory?
There are so many things I love about the Arkansas WAND chapter - I can't name just one activity or memory! I have enjoyed participating in anti-war demonstrations. Our Mother’s Day Peace Luncheon is always a success, and emphasizes what Mother’s Day is truly all about. And I currently enjoy spending time watering and weeding the Peace Garden.
What do you like to do outside of WAND?
I enjoy skiing with my family and bicycling around Little Rock. I love spending time with my grandsons! And I volunteer at the Clinton School of Public Service to support their lecture series.
